Second Division 1894-95

Dundee Wanderers hold a distinct place in the pantheon of senior football in the city. Other than Dundee and Dundee Hibernian/United, Dundee Wanderers are the only other city team to have played in the Scottish League. They played in the Second Division during 1894-95. That was to be their only season in the Scottish League as they finished second bottom and failed to be re-elected. Try as they might they could not gain re-entry and ended their days playing in the Northern League. The decline set in after the early 1900 just as their city rivals, Dundee, were starting to thrive. Dundee Wanderers lost the tenancy of Clepington Park to Dundee Hibernian and were homeless for 1909-10. A ground was secured in 1910 and a radical change of colours from maroon to gold & blue followed but the club was only to last a couple of more years before folding.

Dundee Wanderers actually started out life as Dundonians with their first ever game was a 5-1 defeat played on Saturday 20th January 1894 against Hibernian at Easter Road. The team that lined up that day: Goal: Gould; Backs: Penney & Gould; Half-backs: Ireland, Simpson & Matthew; Forwards: Nicoll, Falconer, McHardy, McWee & Malcolm.

The new club's first home game was against Celtic at Clepington Park in front of 1,500 on 27th January 1894. The game ended in a respectable 2-2 draw. The line up that day- Gould, McIntosh, Penney, Ireland, Simpson, McHardy, Fimister, Gould, Aimers, McWee & Malcolm.
