The 'Early Rising Club'

Foot-ball in Barrack Park - a Courier & Daily Argus Article from April 1861

"The Game at Football

The [property] committee, having considered the letter from the 'Early Rising Club', craving to be allowed to play at Football in the Barrack Park from six to eight in the morning, were of the opinion that such games might be dangerous to parties frequenting the Park, and recommended the Council not to allow the game of football in the Park. Agreed to."

Dundee Football Club v Dalhousie (Broughty Ferry), 04 Nov 1871

"FOOTBALL - A match is to be played in the Baxter Park to-day, at three o'clock, between fifteen of the Dalhousie Club, Broughty Ferry, and fifteen of the Dundee Club. As this game is new to Dundee, and this is the first match that has been played, considerable interest is being taken by the young gentlemen of the town, and a large concourse of spectators will no doubt be in the Park to witness the match." Dundee Courier & Daily Argus, 04 Nov 1871.

Rugby Clubs

Before the association code was introduced, there were 'football' clubs playing a game more akin to rugby and had been for a few years. Some of the young men playing in those sides would make the switch to the association game - there are mentions of familiar family names of 'Stiven' and 'Longair' in the match reports.
